About Vet Services Wairarapa Equine
Louisa was the founding member of Wairarapa Equine (you can read more about her below). This service was very successful and soon outgrew the single vet capacity, and so it has merged with Vet Services Wairarapa (now The Vet Clinic Wairarapa) to offer more vets, more infrastructure, and the ability to also offer veterinary help for other species. You can visit their website here.
Along with the merger and a new name comes a lovely new building, currently being transformed from Masterton Medical on Lincoln Road into a state of the art Vet clinic. This will be our new base as soon as it is finished (some time this winter!). These facilities will include equine facilities and drive through area for floats etc.
About Louisa
Louisa Broughton BVSc GP Cert (EQp) graduated as a vet from Massey University in New Zealand then worked in mixed practice in the Wairarapa before moving to England in 2004. She has developed her interest in equine work since, including doing the General Practitioners Certificate in Equine Practice thorugh the European School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies. She has worked in mostly equine practice since, including second opinion equine practices.
Since returning from the UK, Louisa has done a 2 months stint at the Equine Department of the Massey University Teaching Hospital, which has been fabulous for fostering good relationships with some world class clinicians. She is also a very experienced horsewoman, having produced horses of all ages and types, from new born foals to international eventers, so has an excellent understanding of the trials and tribulations horses like to offer!
Louisa is happy to see any horse or pony clients for any areas of concern and is now offering an after hours service for registered clients. Please feel free to email us to register or ring on (06) 378 2662.
New Vet Services Wairarapa Equine Team Members
Gene Cashman and Sandy Redden will be working alongside Louisa in the Vet Services Wairarapa Equine Team. Both Gene and Sandy ride and are very used to working closely with our Equine friends.
Lameness & Poor Performance
Louisa has a particular passion for lameness workups and poor performance cases and is also interested in pre purchase examinations. She really enjoys the challenge of helping get the best out of whichever equine she works with - whether that be for dressage, eventing, western, racing or indeed to be a safe child's pony! She is very happy to work with farriers / dentists/ physios and other vets as optimal horse performance is a team effort. Enquiries from clients or any of these health professionals are most welcome. More information on lameness and poor performance click here.
Mobile Horse Vet
The mobile nature of the business means that a second opinion including nerve blocks and digital radiography can be done on the horse's own yard. This is obviously convenient for the horse owner but can also mean some subtle problems are highlighted - sometimes adrenaline levels can be raised in a different environment, masking subtle lameness or performance problems. It is also possible to bring the horse to a convenient location in the Wairarapa if facilities at home are lacking. Panorama Equestrian in Gladstone has an excellent relationship with us and we are frequently there - they offer short or long term livery for treatment or rehabilitation options, and they have fabulous facilities including a purpose built perfectly flat concrete area for doing foot balance xrays. You can checking them out here.
Louisa has a strong interest in all things horse related, having ridden from a young age, and enjoys riding competitively in her spare time. She also enjoys cooking and exploring the beautiful NZ countryside.
